Nanaimo, B.C.
(Read the LogBlog entry from Nanaimo)

Nanaimo is a good size city and there are a great selection of shops, restaurants and attractions to choose from. There is also a nice walk up Bastion Street to the Old City Quarter where restored brick-and-stone buildings line Fitzwilliam, Wesley and Selby streets. These heritage buildings house an interesting selection of boutiques and outdoor cafes.

In the early 1800's the Hudson's Bay Company discovered rich coal deposits in the area. White settlers who came from England and Scotland to work in the coalmines originally named the city Coville Town. Later, the town adopted the native name of Nanaimo - meaning "big strong tribe" in reference to the area's five villages.

Things to See & Do

Historic Nanaimo
The historic mining town of Nanaimo has undergone a transformation in recent years; its waterfront is now an attractive 2-mile network of public walkways, parks, restaurants and shops.

Along the walkway, overlooking the harbor is The Bastion. Built by the Hudson's Bay Company in 1853 when coal deposits were discovered in the area, the arsenal's guns were never used to defend the surrounding settlement from attack, but now, each day at noon, a cannon is fired at the Bastion.

Centennial Museum
This museum overlooks the harbor a short walk south of The Bastion, and features a lifelike reproduction of a coal mine and an exhibit of downtown Nanaimo as it would have looked at the turn of the century.

Golf
There are two golf options on Nanaimo; Pryde Vista (250.753.6188) is a pretty and easily walked 9-hole par 30 course. Nanaimo Golf & Country Club (250.758.4921) is a farther cab ride, but is a first class, 18-hole course.

Petroglyph Provincial Park
Just a few miles south of downtown, at the mouths of the Nanaimo River, visitors can view ancient rock carvings left by the area's early natives.
