Grand Tour 2006

Khutze Inlet, B.C.
(Read the LogBlog entry from Khutze Inlet)

Khutze Inlet, surrounded by steep, snow-capped mountains, towering waterfalls and pristine forestland, was perhaps the most beautiful and spectacular of all anchorages on the Grand Tour. Seals and otters played in the waters, while a large grizzly spent a long dinner in the tall grass of the meadow at the head of the inlet. The calls of waterfowl and the constant sound of the lovely waterfall make this an unforgettable spot. Words truly cannot do justice to the stunning scenery of this anchorage.

The entrance to Khutze inlet is on the east short of Graham Reach, almost 13 miles north of Hiekish Narrows. The mile-wide entrance is between Griffin Point on the south and Asher Point on the north.

Things to See & Do

Klemtu
The pretty village of Klemtu lies behind aptly names Cone Island on the west side of Finlayson Channel. The village is in Trout Bay, with easy access to fuel and water, and two stores selling groceries, fishing gear and general goods.

Located in the heart of the beautiful Great Bear Rainforest, Klemtu is home to the Kitasoo/Xaixais people. Neeso Wakwis means "Our Lands" in the Kitasoo language and since the last ice age this area has been largely uninhabited except for the Kitasoo people who have thrived here for thousands of years in one of the richest, most diverse ecosystems on earth.

Anchorage Info
When entering the inlet, favor the north shore to pass Green Spit, which extends from the southern shore and leaves a clear passage east of Asher Point. By proceeding 3.5 miles past the spit and favoring the southern shore you pass Pardoe Point to arrive at an anchorage area near a spectacular waterfall (see the Grand Tour photo gallery). Anchor close to shore west of the waterfall in 6-8 fathoms, sticky mud. Very shallow shoals off the waterfall drop quickly and must be given plenty of clearance to avoid grounding when the tide falls or current cause your vessel to swing.
