Foggy Bay
(Read the LogBlog entry from Foggy Bay)
Foggy Bay is the first anchorage north of Dixon Entrance, and one of the best for its protection from ocean swells and chop. Our Grand Tour fleet anchored at the inner cove on the far eastern side of the bay. Rain forest surrounds the basin, and wildlife, including bear and little martens, poke about its shores searching for food.
Anchorage Info
If Foggy By is your first anchorage in Alaska coming north on the Inside Passage, please remember that you must contact the U.S. Customs Authorities before anchoring.
The entrance to Foggy Bay is just north of Foggy Point, and it is preferable to enter at lower tide when many of the various rocks, reefs and shoals are clearly visible. When turning into the inner cove of Foggy Bay, clear the reefs that extend about a half-mile north of Foggy Point, then steer to pass south of the submerged reefs that extend about three-quarters off a mile south-southeast of DeLong Islands. The approach to the inner cove lies behind a large wooded island. As you approach the shore the entrance becomes clearer, but never obvious because the land behind it appears to enclose it. Stay clear off the reefs at the entrance, until the channel leading behind the island is visible. Though narrow, a mid-channel route leads easily into the wider basin where secure anchorage can be taken in 5 to 6 fathoms, mud.
