Meyers Chuck, Alaska
(Read the LogBlog entry from Meyers Chuck)
Meyers Chuck is a small, convenient harbor that is ideally situated to split the distance between Ketchikan and Wrangell. It is an active boardwalk village, home to about 50 people, with a strong fishing history. There is a store with limited supplies and a post office, from which mail is picked up weekly.
Things to See & Do
Sculpture for the Table
During our stay at Meyers Chuck, the Grand Tour was graciously hosted by a number of local residents, including Greg Rice and Rebecca Welti. Greg and Rebecca make their living fishing, and are also the proprietors of Sculpture for the Table, a studio and workshop where they produce exquisite bowls and utensils carved from the stumps of Alaska yellow cedar. Greg even held a demonstration for Tour participants to show us how he turned a wooden bowl.
Greg and Rebecca spend days searching the steep slopes for large and sound stumps and carefully plan each bowl block to maximize the beauty and strength of the grain. A stump can yield between 20 and 30 bowls. Next, they hand-carry each block and transport it back to Meyers Chuck, where Greg uses a chainsaw to cut the blocks into manageable shapes for turning. On the lathe, each form is turned with an eye toward the most appealing and unique grain. Slowly dried by the woodstove, a bowl is ready for finishing two weeks after it leaves the lathe. After drying the bowls in the studio, Rebecca spends many hours sanding and carving, inlaying and applying multiple coats of hand-rubbed color and varnish. In this way, they transform a fifty-pound block of wood, once waste of the logging industry, into a beautiful yet functional heirloom, weighing but a pound or two.
