Grand Tour 2006

Sullivan Bay, B.C.
We LOVE Sullivan Bay!

(Read more about Sullivan Bay & view the photos.)

Another pre-dawn skippers' briefing after the 4am weather report. Everyone's watching the West Sea Otter weather buoy in Queen Charlotte Strait to see if conditions will green-light our departure. All the captains are gathered on GB42 Sea Gate to hear the news. Bleary eyed but eager to push on northward we wait for the news - and it says…

No go.

One more at Sullivan Bay. Fortunately, there are always things to do when you're traveling on the Grand Tour (and a tour of Sullivan Bay's painted propane tanks will keep you busy for At mid-morning, 70CP Sanctuary takes the group to nearby Greenpoint Sound for a hike up to an isolated lake that feeds into a beautiful waterfall. The beaver dam is huge now, stretching the shores of the upper lake while letting just a trickle through the a lower basin.

Upon return to Sullivan Bay, owners are treated to a discussion and Q&A session with author and Alaska cruising expert Margo Wood. She gives tips and ideas for the owners who are traveling beyond our Wrangell destination, along with ideas of other sites to see for the return trip back through the Inside Passage.

Next is the afternoon skippers' briefing, and the word is more encouraging. The barometer has been steadily rising all day, the waves out at West Sea Otter have fallen to below two meters, and the winds appear to be calming.

We're all keeping our fingers crossed for our crossing.

Next: it's 5pm, and this wouldn't be a boating trip without a (relatively) spontaneous "docktail party." Everyone brings appetizers and drinks, but it's Mr. Takagi who steals the show with his fresh-caught seafood dishes. Dressed in a crisp chef's apron and GB cap, he serves up delicious pieces of fried black cod, plus sashimi that was a hit as well. In fact there may have been more but we lost track. The party and the food came together with such fin and spontaneity, the dock packed to capacity with GB owners laughing at each other's jokes and stories, that it all washed away our disappointment of spending another day on the dock instead of at sea. THIS is what being a GB owner is all about!

Tomorrow: the crossing!
