Santa Anna Inlet
A Pristine Passage

(Read more about Santa Anna Inlet & view the photos.)

Nestled in quaint Meyers Chuck, the fleet was greeted early morning with the sounds of a chopper flying overhead. Captain Tomi and her crew on M/V Savage had left us for Ketchikan early that morning with a 4 am departure. A photographer for Yachting Magazine organized the fleet for a dramatic and graceful departure from our anchorage...

Organized in tightly spaced lines, we made quite a sight traveling along at 5 knots, each boat only 2 boat lengths away each other. Best Ever, our intrepid 54 Eastbay, likely was chomping at the bit at that speed, but withheld its unbridled enthusiasm. We continued on while the helicopter circled around snapping photos. Poetically, a small pod of Orcas appeared just off the bow, portside of the lead boat. We cautiously stayed away from them as we made our progression.

Curious boats noted our formation and to both our port and starboard, two in particular, came closer to see what the strange, tight, gathering of Grand Banks was up to. Looking from the aft deck of the lead boat, the sight was impressive. One can only imagine the sight from on high. And then, the photos taken, the formation was allowed to disperse and each boat parted ways, fanning out to more open ocean. Larry Crouch, Grand Banks Service Manager, described the fast dispersion as not unlike, "the North American Fleet upon seeing a submarine."

Turning the corner we arrived in Santa Anna Inlet, a mere 19 nautical miles north of Meyers Chuck. Many of us rafted up together to conserve space, but also to share space as Sanctuary and Sea Gate, for example, hosted a joint dinner. It was an idyllic spot for our final anchorage, quiet, intimate, pristine. A perfect place to reflect on what a unique and amazing journey this has been.
